The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved Indiaβs
largest domestic ammunition contract, valued at over βΉ10,000 crore, to
manufacture rockets for the Armyβs needs over the next decade. The production
will be handled by Munition India Ltd. and Economic Explosives Ltd. (EEL), both
of which have received technology transfers from the Defence Research and
Development Organisation (DRDO). Sources indicate that EEL, which was the
lowest bidder, will receive 60% of the contract value, while Munition India
Ltd. will secure the remaining 40%, having agreed to match the lower bid.
The Pinaka Mk-I (Enhanced) Rocket System (EPRS), which has
been approved for acquisition, boasts a range of over 45 km and is capable of
rapid movement after launching at enemy targets. A longer-range variant,
capable of striking targets at 75 km, has also been successfully tested and is
expected to be ordered in the future. Additionally, work is underway to develop
even longer-range versions capable of striking targets at over 150 km. The
Pinaka system will be supplied to the Army over the next decade.
Developed by DRDO, the Pinaka system has already seen export
success with Armenia. The Indian Army has already placed orders for Pinaka
regiments and is expected to place more orders in the future, given the
system's proven success.
